“Time to go” says the cloud

মেঘ বলেছে 'যাব যাব'
megh bolechhe jaabo jaabo

“Time to go” says the cloud
“I am on my way” says night
The sea says “I have touched my shore
 – myself I am no more”
Sorrow says “Stay will I as His footprint”
This self says “I dissolve,
nothing more do I wish”

The world says “For you I wreathe a garland”
The sky says “For you I’ve lit a thousand lamps”
Love says “For you it is I stay awake through aeons”
Death says “It is I who row your life-boat”

  1. A version by Suman Dasgupta

    Said the cloud unwilling,
    'O wait, I'm coming'.
    Replied the night unease,
    'just a moment, please'.
But lo! there announced the sea,
'I met the shore -- I'm no more'.
Came a hush from sorrow 'quiet I'as,
Let me remain as His footprint does',
But lo! there spake thy Soul,
'Got united, nothing more I wanted'.

Said the wide world quiet and blithesome,
'this garland was always there for your welcome'
Greeted the vast open sky above
'Ten thousand lamps for you lit I've'.
    Proclaimed Love ever forgiving,
'Time after time, for you I've been',
    Assured finally even the Undertaker,
'Why tarry? for your boat I'm the rower'.
